This type of sink has a lip, or edge, all around the top, designed to catch and hold while the rest of the sink is mounted down into a hole in the countertop.How the sink is mounted, or installed in the cabinet during the kitchen remodeling, changes the overall appearance of the sink area in your kitchen design. The fine quartz surface is available in a variety of vibrant colors to brighten up any kitchen layout, plus it’s easy to clean and resists stains and scratches. Quartz. Another fine stone material sink, the quartz design is high on visual appeal as well as functionality.Prices mid to upper range, depending on color, design, and construction. Long-lasting and very appealing, they are often the choice for a permanent installation designed to last for years. Granite. Extremely durable and versatile, granite sinks feature a number of stone colors and surfaces, great for matching with a carefully coordinated kitchen architecture.Some have an antique look for that old country appeal, others have a hammered, rugged appearance, still others have a brightly polished luster. Copper or bronze. These gorgeous sinks come in several styles.Prices range based on size and thickness. Very durable and versatile, their only real downside is getting a chip in the enamel. Cast iron. These sinks are usually enameled, and come in a variety of colors and finishes.The main downside is longevity, as they tend to wear out sooner than some of the more solid designs. They are lightweight, useful for nearly any use, and fairly inexpensive. Stainless steel. Easy to clean and maintain, the stainless steel sink is a mainstay of most commercial kitchens and many residential ones too.In a previous house I had a fireclay sink and did not like it quite as well as the cast iron enameled Kohler, but it was still a gorgeous sink. You can also get a large cast iron enamel single basin undermount style that doesn’t have the farmhouse or apron front style front exposed (the sink goes fully inside the cabinet) and they are wonderful, I’ve had that style of sink, too. I had the smaller profile Kohler Whitehaven, which I loved and it worked in my existing cabinet with modifications, but there is also larger version, so be sure to order the exact size you need and the style that works for your look! I much prefer the under mount style sinks for a cleaner look. It is an undermount design, which means it goes under your countertop. It is a cast iron enameled apron front sink. The best farmhouse-style sink I’ve found (and had in my last house) is the Kohler Whitehaven. These are HEAVY sinks so you’ll need a sturdy and supportive cabinet, too. You’ll need a custom cabinet for a farmhouse sink, or at least a modified one to accomodate it (in our old house our contractor just modified our existing sink cabinet to fit the type of apron front sink we chose) so be sure to check dimensions and ask your contractor to be certain the specific sink you want will work with your particular cabinets. You can see an example of a apron front sink, below. ![]() Most people (like me!) refer to apron front sinks as farmhouse sinks and they definitely have that same look, but I think technically apron front sinks are called that because they have a slightly different design. The apron front sinks have a finished “front” that fits over the front of a cabinet to create the “farmhouse” sink look. My first post on kitchen open shelving was last week!
